These paintings are not for sale.
Michael Tine has painted for more than fifty years, since he was about twenty-five. He does not sell the work, and the reason is a position, not a strategy. “Art belongs to everybody,” he says. “Once you own it, you can do anything you want with it. You can tear it up. You can throw it away. You can use it to wallpaper your chicken house. And nobody can do anything about it.”
So the paintings stay together. He intends to give the body of work, intact, to an institution or benefactor who will keep it whole and exhibit it. The point is that it survives as one thing and stays where people can see it.
