What it is
Limestone is sedimentary calcium carbonate, the rock that becomes marble when it is metamorphosed. Carved before that transformation, it is softer and more even, without marble’s crystalline sparkle.
Characteristics
It is forgiving. The grain is fine and consistent, which makes it predictable to rough out and pleasant for sustained form work, and it takes a quiet matte surface rather than a high polish. It is more porous than marble and reads softer in daylight.
