Visiting the studio
The studio is open by appointment. A visit is the best way to understand the work: stone at scale reads differently in person than in a photograph, and seeing a piece in progress explains the method better than any description.
The WAV studio
Michael Tine works at WAV, Working Artists Ventura, in Building 175, Studio 108, in Ventura, California. It is a working space, not a showroom: blocks in various states, tools, dust, and natural light. Finished and in-progress pieces are usually both on hand.
Art City Studios
He also works at Art City Studios in Ventura, the stone yard and carving community founded by sculptor Paul Lindhard. Art City is the reason he is in Ventura at all: hunting the right block of marble for an early commission led him there, and he stayed and worked off studio rent to keep carving. The place has a culture as much as a stone supply, and it is worth seeing on its own terms. More at artcitystudios.com.
Arranging a visit
Use the contact form or call the studio at (714) 330-3881. Say roughly when you would like to come and what you are interested in (a commission, a particular kind of work, teaching). Visits are scheduled around carving time, so a little notice helps.
Open studios
Ventura’s Westside ArtWalk and WAV open-studio events are the easiest way to see the space without a private appointment.
