Studying stone carving with Michael Tine
Michael Tine teaches stone carving and sculpture. He came to teaching honestly: his MFA at the University of Wyoming was on an assistantship, which meant teaching figure drawing and sculpture in exchange for tuition, and he has kept teaching since. He currently teaches at two institutions in the Los Angeles area and takes a limited number of private students.

Private instruction
He takes a small number of private students. Stone carving is physical, slow, and tool-specific, and private instruction suits people who want sustained one-to-one time with the material rather than a class setting. Inquiries go through the contact form.
What the teaching is like
It is hand work taught by hand: tools, the behavior of the stone, and the habit of finding the form by working rather than by transferring a drawing onto the block. It is the same approach he uses in his own studio, taught at a beginner’s pace. No prior stone experience is assumed for the introductory classes.
