What it is
Soapstone is a metamorphic rock rich in talc, which is what gives it the soft, soapy feel it is named for. It is the softest of the stones in regular use here.
Characteristics
It cuts and shapes easily, even with hand pressure, and it holds heat and warms to the touch. The color runs grey to green to near-black, often with subtle figure. It can be worked to a deep, low sheen rather than a bright polish, and it is durable once finished despite the softness.
