What it is
Travertine is a form of limestone deposited at mineral springs and in caves, where calcium carbonate precipitates out of moving water. That origin gives it a layered, banded structure and a characteristic pattern of small voids.
Characteristics
It is lighter and more open than dense marble. The banding is a feature to work with, not against: it sets a grain through the block that a carver reads the way a woodworker reads a board. The natural pits can be left as texture or filled, depending on the piece.
How Tine works it
The internal structure decides a good deal of the approach. The form is developed in conversation with the banding rather than imposed flat across it, the same hand process as the marble work but with the stone’s own direction taken into account.
